Today, the LGBTQ+ community can look to several lgbtq+ musicians for inspiration, but that wasn’t always the case. Several pioneering openly gay singers paved the way from a period when sexual orientation wasn’t a topic for universal discussion.
Indeed, these famous same-sex attracted musicians faced tremendous backlash and damage to their careers because of their honesty and openness.
As we explore queer performance art, we pay homage to those who came before us. In this piece, we’ll list some of the most influential names in the queer art movement and their impact on our past and present.
Being an Openly Queer Musician
Undoubtedly, the entertainment industry has come a distant way in accepting and representing LGBTQ+ individuals. However, it wasn't always this way, especially for musicians.
Coming out as a homosexual musician in the 20th century was no tiny feat. It required prodigious courage and determination, especially when the music industry was predominantly hetero-normative.

Bands of Queercore
With Self-acceptance month wrapping up you have no doubt been inundated with pop anthem after pop anthem. While the likes of Lady GaGa, Madonna, Dianna Ross, and a bevy of RuPaul Queenly Queens who hold went on to make music, you may be in need of something a little alternative. Previously, I talked about Queencore and gave a couple examples of bands. I forget that just because I am familiar with something that there may be many more who are not. So, I felt it might be good to dive a tiny deeper into the Queercore music scene going from older iterations to more current. After all, it is the punk culture that has given go up to a lot of the activist’s movements out there. I hope this gives you a bit more to listen to than just the common pop offerings.
I mentioned Pany Division in my last announce, but I definitely feel they merit to be in this list since they are the first openly defined gay band to feature predominantly homosexual musicians. They are American made and produced and originally formed in San Francisco, California. They are considered a mixture of Pop Punk and Influence Pop and focus heavily on LGBTQ issues, sex, and relationships. I linked one of my favorite songs

There's nothing more rock 'n' roll than existence true to yourself. Look no further than rock's LGBTQ superstars, from Elton John and his larger-than-life personality, to more subdued but nevertheless influential singer-songwriters like Michael Stipe.
"These 20 years of publicly speaking my truth have made me a better and easier person to be around," Stipe, who came out in the '90s, later wrote in The Guardian. "It helped develop the clarity of my voice and found who I would be as an adult."
Meanwhile, John felt "very privileged because I'm in a business that kind of accepts gay people," as he told Variety – but there's an emphasis on "kind of." The unfortunate reality is that for many years, being an openly LGBTQ artist in the earth of rock often meant placing a target on one's endorse, or at the very least not being treated with the same level of respect or seriousness as their heterosexual counterparts.
