Gay breeding is one of those terms you hear about but may not be sure what it means. Moreover, the phrase has been incorrectly used in ways that grant the experience a dirty connotation.

Hey direct people (and some queer folx), discontinue using the phrase “Breeder” because you think it makes you look fancy an ally or “woke.” Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

A couple of weeks ago, a well intentioned but misguided direct person pointed out a group of fellow heterosexuals to me and scoffed about how obnoxious “the breeders” were being. It was said in a hushed, almost secretive tone, as if she was “in” on the lingo—as she were whispering the password to the queer classified clubhouse.

The term took me aback. It’d been awhile since I’d heard such early 2000’s exclusionary slang. Though she was trying to be an ally, the phrase came out foreign and harsh, even though it was delivered with a smirk. She felt fresh . I felt confused.

Like so many words that originate in the queer group, “breeders” is a term straight people heard a decade after it was already outdated. Maybe they finally discovered Queer as Folk and the imaginative seasons of Gender non-conforming Eye or maybe they finally touch “woke” enough to use a synonyms that 15 years ago they tried to claim was hate-speech, equivalent to “faggot” or “dyke.”

Setting aside the absurdity of that decades o

‘Breeder’ Jokes Are Taking Over TikTok, and I Long My Queer Slang Back

For the first time in a while, a TikTok trend caused me to actually gasp. Queer Gen Z TikTokers, some of them seemingly quite juvenile, have discovered the designation “breeder.”

“Breeder” is classic gay lingo. (Straight people, I’m giving away our private language; don’t go snitching.) A breeder is someone who engages in the type of sex that can lead to the production of a brand-new human — i.e., someone in a heterosexual relationship. The term is used jokingly, but it has an implicit negative connotation: It’s meant to make you think of gauche, brutish animal breeding, not sex for pleasure.

Why have TikTok Zoomers adopted breeder memes now? It’s hard to say, but one assume is that IRL breeding feels especially high-stakes amid the sickness and death, wildfires and economic drop. Young people starting their adult lives in a messed-up world may effort to understand why anyone would want to carry on this cycle. You’re really gonna accept the heightened risk and bring a kid into, well, this? And then pay for childcare?

But on TikTok, “breeder” has become shorthand for hetero digital
