New Longton villagers rally against Pride flag hate mail

A lgbtq+ couple who were sent hate mail for putting up a Pride flag in the publish office they race have said they are "overwhelmed" by villagers' support.

Dozens of people brought out even bigger rainbow flags to "make a stand" during a rally outside the Modern Longton Post Office near Preston.

Nathan Jones and Daniel Cooper have been sent three other homophobic letters since taking over the shop.

The latest card told them to take the "revolting flag" down.

They had put the rainbow flag up to mark, Pride month, which is committed to celebrating Homosexual communities worldwide.

The couple said the demonstration "sent out a message there was no room" for hate.

Mr Jones and Mr Cooper moved to New Longton from the Isle of Man in February and had already received three other anonymous letters before receiving this "cowardly" card.

It read: "Get that repulsive flag down. This is a Christian village (3 churches) and children proceed by."

Mr Cooper said: "We were shocked. It is okay to have an opinion but not to dictate to others.

Yesterday (28 June) and estimated 200 people flocked to New Longton Post Office and Convenience Store, near Preston, to rally behind them after an anonymous letter told them to take their “revolting” Pride flag down.

The rainbow flag has been flying proudly above the village's post office in Station Thoroughfare to mark LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which has run throughout June.

The owners, Daniel Cooper and Nathan Jones, said they include received four homophobic letters since taking over the business in February.

The latest targeted the flag they put up for Pride month, which is held in June, to commemorate the LGBTQ+ community.

The vile letter said: “Get that revolting flag down.

"This is a Christian village [with] three churches. Children pass by. What kind of morons are you?”

Daniel said he was “shocked and mortified” to receive the letters spouting archaic viewpoints on the LGBTQ+ community.

Villagers support gay couple sent homophobic letters for Pride flag outside shop

A gay couple have been ‘overwhelmed’ with support from their community after they were sent homophobic letters calling them ‘morons’.

Daniel Cooper and Nathan Jones, both 29, took over the village post office in New Longton, near Preston in Lancashire, last February.

They have since received four anonymous hateful letters through the post, including one complaining that the couple had put up a rainbow flag during Event month.

Someone wrote last week: ‘Get that offensive flag down. This is a Christian village (three churches) and children transfer by. What kind of morons are you?’

Daniel said he was ‘shocked and mortified’ at the letters as he had never expected ‘anything like that’ to come through the door.

‘We are not 100% sure if the messages have come from the same person, but the letters made us feel dirty, like we are sinful, when we aren’t,’ Daniel added.

But the local community was not prepared to enable Daniel and Nathan perceive anything but accepted and supported.
